A Strong Foundation and Exciting Improvements

When my wife and I were looking to buy our first home we spent a lot of time looking at the basement walls. It wasn’t glamorous, it wasn’t exactly what I would call fun, and usually there were more spiders than I cared to see. However, it was important because if the foundation is good there’s no limit as to what can be done.

I think a lot about foundations at Lutheran East. The foundation of faith which can support a life of service. The foundation of a strong education that can support a life of achievement. I also think about our physical building with its strong foundation that can support generations and generations of Falcons. I’m thankful for the men and women that gave and sacrificed their own time and treasure to see this campus come to life, and it’s because of that strong foundation we’re thriving today.

As time passes even the best of buildings and structures, however, need attention and renovation. Over the past several years we’ve been able to do just that. Some of the projects are totally hidden from sight like new roofs. Some restore former glory like the skylights in each of our hallways. Some add convenience like the new water fountains that include water-bottle fillers. Other improvements make a difference each and every day like our new bathrooms, a renovated gymnasium, and updated classrooms.

The value of some projects extend far beyond their practical achievements. I’m specifically thinking about our newly redesigned and landscaped main entryway. Gone is the broken cement and overgrown foliage and unclear signage. In their place is an entrance that welcomes you into the halls of Lutheran East. Visitors will notice a new flag pole, benches and tables, bike racks and trash cans, new landscaping and new signs. Beyond those physical and practical elements of the renovated entryway is a feeling. That feeling is harder to quantify, but it is just as real as the renovation itself. It is a feeling that welcomes you as you approach the main door. It’s a feeling that speaks to the tremendous work that is being done at Lutheran East. It’s a feeling that communicates openness and safety. It’s a feeling that matters, and we are grateful for the generous financial gifts from our community that allow our students to experience that Lutheran East welcome every day.
