Lutheran East Celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day

by Amber Childs

When someone mentions sports, we usually think of the two or three most common: football, basketball, and baseball. Then, we usually think first of men’s sports. Despite the advancements in women’s rights, women’s athletics still have quite a way to go in terms of recognition and equality. Women in Sports Day was created in 1974 by the Women’s Sports Foundation. The day is now called “National Girls and Women in Sports Day,” and its stated purpose is to “advance the lives of women and girls through sports and activity.” In celebration of this mission, we have featured four young ladies who are current Falcon student-athletes, explaining their outlook, not only in their sport, but inside the classroom as well.

  1. What does it mean to you to be a female athlete?

To me being a female athlete means being a leader and inspiring others.

  1. What do you think is the biggest barrier in bringing awareness to women’s sports?

I think the biggest barrier is the support that female sports receive. Men receive more support, especially on television, where you see more male sports being shown.

  1. What does it mean to you to be a student-athlete?

What it means to be a student-athlete is to manage your time wisely, work hard, don’t settle for less, and strive to be better. Definitely, always be the best version of who you are.

  1. What is your greatest athletic accomplishment?

My greatest athletic accomplishment is getting offers to play basketball in college.

  1. What does it mean to you to be a female athlete?

Being a female athlete is one of my greatest achievements by far. Being dedicated and having the opportunity to show my skills not just as an athlete but also as a woman.

  1. What do you think is the biggest barrier in bringing awareness to women’s sports?

The biggest barrier is always comparing women’s and men’s sports. Whether it be their strength or how much work is applied.

  1. What does it mean to you to be a student-athlete?

Being a student-athlete means that school always comes before anything I have to do on the court. So I succeed and do my job in the classroom, then  apply that same energy on the court.

  1. What is your greatest athlete accomplishment?

My greatest athlete accomplishment is playing on the varsity team as a freshman.

  1. What does it mean to you to be a female athlete?

To me, being a female athlete means you are determined, a hard worker and strong willed. Being a female athlete now is very difficult because most of the sports now are very male-centered and male-dominated. So being a female athlete means you stand out and you work hard.

  1. What do you think is the biggest barrier in bringing awareness to women’s sports?

The biggest barrier in women’s sports is definitely the misogyny in today’s society. A lot of women’s sports are overlooked and ignored and most of the male sports are very popular in today’s media. So the biggest barrier is misogyny and how to overcome that hurdle.

  1. What does it mean to you to be a student-athlete?

For me, being a student-athlete means being able to juggle school and being an athlete. Being able to get your work in on time as well as keeping up on your grades. Also, working hard at practice, making sure you PR (personal record) and improving in your sport.

  1. What is your greatest athletic accomplishment?

My greatest athletic accomplishment was that during my freshman year, I cut down on my 800 time by about 30 seconds.

Senior, Class of 2022

Sport: Volleyball

  1. What does it mean to you to be a female athlete?

Being a female athlete is important to me because you normally see male athletes that receive recognition. So the representation of seeing other women in sports is positive.

  1. What do you think is the biggest barrier in bringing awareness to women’s sports?

The biggest barrier in bringing awareness to women’s sports is that some people may not take it as seriously as male sports because they don’t think women are as competitive or aggressive.

  1. What does it mean to you to be a student-athlete?

Being a student-athlete motives me to keep my grades up and dedicates me to being a leader. I can also show people that I’m capable of doing more than just having good grades.

  1. What is your greatest athletic accomplishment?

My sophomore year was the first time I ever played volleyball and then my senior year, I became captain of the volleyball team. It took a lot of hard work and dedication because it’s not easy. You have to work for what you want because nothing is given to you.
